As a component of the federal judiciary, the United States Probation Office is responsible for investigating individuals convicted of federal crimes and supervising offenders conditionally released to the community by the courts, the U.S. Parole Commission, and military authorities. The Administrative Office of the United States Courts defines the mission of the U.S. Probation System as:
The United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi was established June 18, 1838 and serves 45 counties located throughout the state. In the District, the U.S. Probation Office works closely with 10 district court judges and 5 magistrate judges in the administration of justice at federal courthouses in Jackson, Gulfport, and Hattiesburg, in addition to federal facilities at Natchez and Meridian. The probation office is headquartered at the federal courthouse in Jackson and has branch offices at the federal courthouses in Gulfport and Hattiesburg.
